  1. This is in response to a recent post by Phil Beauchard.

May I gently suggest that you not use the word “illegal immigrants” when you discuss health care benefits. What comes through when you write this in today’s charged environment (which is so anti-Latina/o), is that your comment is directed at that ethnic minority in the USA (which today is numerically larger than African Americans).

It’s great that the lack of universal health care is your pet peeve about the way the US economy works (read: doesn’t work) today. For at least 3 years (1995-97)I have worked in St. Cloud for health care for all. It came to my notice that Latinas/os have been stereotyped as “illegal aliens.” I strongly object to this phrase. In fact, I even object to the term “illegal” applied to those who come to the USA to work (all too often for exploitative wages, and at jobs no Whites will accept).

Perhaps some day, time permitting, you and I could discuss what we mean by “illegal” and whom we’re referring to. Till then, I suggest that fighting for the rights of undocumented workers (a more appropriate term) is something that should seriously concern OSC.

Usage of terms such as “illegals” can serve to drive away Latina/o participation in OSC. Not because Latinas/os are illegal, but because this term is insensitive and, one might add, ill-advised in light of many centuries of US history of abuse of Latinas/os. This is a nation of immigrants. It’s entirely Native American land. Whites were among the first illegal occupiers of this land.

Your brother in the struggle for economic and social justice in OSC.
